Botany in Interior Design: A Healthier Relationship With Home

Houseplants change a room. They add color, texture, rhythm, and a living presence that no throw pillow can quite imitate. Their health claims, however, deserve the same care we give the plants themselves.

The best evidence does not support treating a few pots as air purifiers, humidifiers for every climate, soundproofing, or sleep therapy. It does suggest something gentler and still worthwhile: indoor greenery can make spaces more enjoyable, may support relaxation and some aspects of attention, and can influence humidity when used in sufficient numbers.

The Greenprint: How Plants Function and Flourish

Botany examines how plants are built and how they live. Roots anchor the plant and take up water and nutrients. Stems move those resources. Leaves capture light and exchange gases. Flowers support reproduction and, for us, add another layer of beauty.

Through photosynthesis, plants use light energy to make sugars from carbon dioxide and water, releasing oxygen along the way. It is a remarkable process, but a normal collection of houseplants does not produce enough oxygen to noticeably change a room. Good ventilation remains the practical way to manage indoor carbon dioxide.

Breathe Easy—But Keep the Window and Exhaust Fan

Plants can remove some volatile organic compounds in sealed test chambers. The celebrated NASA experiments demonstrated that ability under controlled conditions, but ordinary homes are larger, leakier, and constantly exchanging air. A review that compared chamber results with real-building ventilation concluded that passive potted plants remove VOCs far too slowly to make a meaningful difference at household scale.

The Well-Being Case: Promising, Not Prescriptive

The psychological case for plants is more encouraging than the air-purifier story, though it is not a medical prescription. A 2022 systematic review included 42 records and found generally positive results, particularly for relaxed physiological responses and some cognitive outcomes. Only 16 records could be used in its meta-analyses, and most pooled outcomes drew on just two or three studies. That leaves room for optimism—and for better research.

Small experiments have found calmer self-reports or physiological responses during plant-related tasks, while workplace studies have linked greener offices with greater satisfaction and better performance on certain tasks. These findings do not mean a fern treats anxiety or depression. They do support a simpler idea: a plant you enjoy may make a desk, kitchen, or reading corner feel more pleasant and restorative.

Humidity and Temperature: Let the Room Decide

Plants release water vapor through transpiration. In a 2024 office experiment, five Boston ferns raised median relative humidity from 29.1% to 38.9%, while 18 raised it to 49.2%. The same study did not find significant changes in room temperature or carbon dioxide.

That is a meaningful result in a dry room, not a universal instruction to add more plants. In a damp home, extra humidity can work against you. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally around 30% to 50%. Use a hygrometer, watch for condensation, and solve leaks rather than asking plants to regulate the building.

Can Plants Make a Room Quieter?

Leaves, stems, growing media, and planters can absorb or scatter some sound. Laboratory work has measured this effect, especially in dense arrangements and purpose-built green walls. A handful of pots may soften reflections in a hard-surfaced room, but it will not block traffic, voices through a wall, or a noisy appliance.

What About Sleep?

A bedroom plant can make the room feel calmer, and a familiar care routine may help you wind down. There is not good evidence that ordinary houseplants improve sleep by increasing oxygen. Studies of lavender aroma or essential oil are not the same as keeping a potted lavender plant on a nightstand.

Choose bedroom plants for beauty, safe placement, and compatible light—not as treatment for insomnia or breathing problems.
