The Hidden Power of Houseplants—And Its Limits

Indoor air quality matters. Paints, cleaners, furnishings, cooking, smoke, moisture, and outdoor pollution can all shape what we breathe at home. Houseplants belong in that picture, but not quite in the superhero role they are often given.

Plants can take up certain gases under controlled conditions. In an ordinary home, however, a few pots do not clean the air fast enough to compete with ventilation or source control. That does not make plants pointless. It simply means the strongest reason to grow them is the life, color, and sense of connection they bring—not a promise that they will replace fresh air or a proper air cleaner.

What the NASA Clean Air Study Actually Tested

The famous 1989 NASA report on interior landscape plants explored whether plant-and-soil systems could remove chemicals such as benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. The work was aimed partly at tightly sealed environments and used small, controlled chambers with injected pollutants.

Those experiments established an interesting biological fact: leaves, roots, growing media, and their microbes can take up or transform some volatile organic compounds. They did not show that one spider plant or peace lily will measurably purify the air in a normally ventilated bedroom.

A later review translated results from 12 chamber studies into a measure used for air cleaners. The researchers found a median clean-air delivery rate of just 0.023 cubic meters per hour for a single plant. Their estimate suggested that typical buildings would need roughly 10 to 1,000 plants per square meter of floor area to match the VOC removal already provided by normal outdoor-air exchange. In other words: the chamber effect is real, but its practical impact is tiny at household scale.

Photosynthesis Is Not a Whole-Home Air System

In light, plants use carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. That process is essential to life on Earth, but the contribution from a few houseplants is too small to create an “oxygen-rich” room or noticeably counter the carbon dioxide produced by people.

A 2024 office experiment tested rooms with no plants, five Boston ferns, and 18 Boston ferns. The plants raised relative humidity, but the researchers found no significant effect on room temperature or corrected carbon-dioxide concentration. The takeaway is refreshingly practical: enjoy photosynthesis, but let ventilation handle the room.

Some plants, including snake plants, use a water-saving pathway called CAM and take in carbon dioxide mainly at night. That makes them botanically interesting, not proven sleep aids. Their nighttime gas exchange is far too small to improve bedroom oxygen or sleep quality.

So What Actually Improves Indoor Air Quality?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends three basic approaches:

  • Control the source: reduce smoking and combustion indoors, fix leaks, choose lower-emitting products when possible, and follow directions for paints, cleaners, and solvents.
  • Improve ventilation: use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans and bring in outdoor air when conditions allow.
  • Use proven filtration when needed: choose an appropriately sized air cleaner for particles, and remember that not every filter removes gases or VOCs.

If you suspect carbon monoxide, use working carbon-monoxide alarms and address the combustion source. No plant can make carbon monoxide safe.

Where Houseplants Can Still Help

Plants can make a room feel more welcoming, soften hard visual lines, and give us a small living thing to notice and care for. Research on indoor greenery also suggests possible benefits for relaxation and some cognitive measures, although studies vary and houseplants are not a medical treatment.

They can also add moisture through transpiration. That may be welcome in a very dry room, but it is not automatically beneficial. If your home is already humid, adding moisture can encourage mold. A simple hygrometer is more useful than guessing.

Choose plants for the conditions you can provide:

Healthy plants are worth pursuing because thriving greenery is more enjoyable—not because dusty leaves suddenly stop purifying a house.

Clean Air, Green Home: A Better Balance

A green home can absolutely feel fresher, calmer, and more alive. The honest version is even more useful than the myth: ordinary houseplants are not high-capacity air purifiers, and there is no evidence-based rule requiring two plants per 100 square feet.

Open the window when appropriate. Run the exhaust fan. Remove pollution at its source. Use tested filtration when the situation calls for it. Then fill the room with as many plants as you can happily care for—because you love living with them.
